Victoria Falls Activities

Victoria Falls has become the adrenaline capital of the world, with more adventure activities on offer any other destination.

Of course the top reason people visit Victoria Falls is to tour the description-defying falls.  Nothing compares to the awe one experiences, watching a kilometer-wide curtain of the Zambezi River power crashing into the gorge, sending a thick spray sky-high and wetting the unique rainforest.  It is, without doubt, one of the most compelling sites in the world.

An aerial ‘Flight of Angels’ by helicopter or light aircraft will increase one’s appreciation of the natural spectacle.

For those who prefer soft adventure, Zambezi River cruises offer romance and infinite photographic opportunities to capture hippo pods against flaming sunsets for which the river is famed.  Sedate canoeing brings you up close and personal with the wildlife which frequents the river banks day, and night game drives awaken the nocturnal world of the African bush.

For adrenaline junkies, Victoria Falls offers more than a fair fix.  Take, for instance, what is arguably the planet’s wildest whitewater rafting and river boarding (surfing) through ferocious rapids aptly named The Boiling Pot, The Devil’s Toilet Bowl, The Terminator and Commercial Suicide. Add the motor power of specially-designed jet-boat to the sheer force of the river as it crashes it way through the narrow gorges, and you have enough exhilaration to last a lifetime.

If plunging’s your thing, there’s the heart-stopping 111m bunji-jump off the historic bridge straddling two countries, or a harnessed bridge swing giving a 360-degree view of the river, gorge and bridge.

Operators have recently added a hugely popular bridge slide from the lip of the gorge to the centre of the bridge.  For the less adventurous, a foot-tour of the bridge which takes participants back a century in history to share the legendary Cape-to-Cairo vision of Cecil John Rhodes.

A Victoria Falls game-viewing excursion is always rewarding as sightings of elephant, buffalo, hippo and warthog are common.  Highly informative and interactive are elephant-back safaris, game-spotting walks and drives in open safari vehicles.  Notable is the lion encounter, a walk ‘led by the lions’ to climb trees, stalk small game and play in riverbeds’.  All game activities are conducted under the expert supervision of professional guides whose respect and deep love for the wildlife and bush is unquestionable.
